Salomon Men’s Aero Blaze 4 GRVL Review

Initial Impressions

Having reviewed the previous generation, I was interested to see whether the Salomon Men’s Aero Blaze 4 GRVL would bring meaningful changes to a shoe I already liked. After several weeks of running on gravel, dirt, and pavement, it became clear that Salomon has stayed with the formula that worked while making a few useful updates.

The Aero Blaze 4 GRVL retains the same cushioning, stability, and contaGRIP® outsole that worked well for me in the previous generation. The biggest functional change is the addition of quickLACE™ neo, which replaces the traditional lacing system with a faster way to secure and adjust the shoes. Salomon also updated the engineered mesh upper and added reflective elements for better visibility in lower light.

Design, Comfort & Fit

The fit of the Aero Blaze 4 GRVL is essentially unchanged from the previous generation, which is a good thing in my book. I wore the same Men’s 10.5 size and experienced the same comfortable fit, roomy enough in the toe box without feeling loose elsewhere. The shoes still require a short break in period, but after that they settled in comfortably.

The biggest day to day improvement is the quickLACE™ neo system. It makes securing the shoes noticeably faster than traditional laces while still providing a secure fit throughout a run. Once tightened, the laces stayed in place and never loosened on their own. If my feet swelled during a run and I wanted to make an adjustment, loosening and readjusting the fit was also quick and easy.

The engineered mesh sensiFIT™ upper feels very similar to the previous version in terms of breathability and overall comfort. My feet stayed the same temperature during testing, and I never had an issue with excessive heat. Salomon also kept reflective elements that are noticeable in lower light, providing a useful visibility improvement without changing the overall appearance of the shoe.

Performance

I tested the Aero Blaze 4 GRVL over several weeks, with a mix of gravel, dirt, and pavement. The familiar optiFOAM² midsole provides the same cushioning and stability I appreciated in the previous generation. As a heavier footed runner, I continue to appreciate the way the cushioning absorbs impact without making the shoe feel unstable or overly soft.

The contaGRIP® outsole also carries over with essentially the same tread design and traction characteristics. On gravel and dirt trails, the grip remains excellent, providing plenty of confidence through loose sections and uneven surfaces. The outsole still has a noticeably sticky feel on pavement, which isn't surprising given that these shoes are designed for gravel and mixed terrain rather than dedicated road running. On gravel and dirt trails, the traction is excellent and plays to the shoe's strengths.  The 8mm drop remains within my normal range, and I experienced no unusual discomfort or adjustment issues during testing. The shoes also retain the lightweight feel that made the previous generation enjoyable to run in.

Durability & Maintenance

After several weeks of testing, the Aero Blaze 4 GRVL has held up well. I found no loose material, fraying, or other signs of premature wear. The outsole shows minimal wear overall, with most of it coming from the pavement portions of my runs. The upper and lacing system have also remained in good condition.

Closing Thoughts

The Salomon Aero Blaze 4 GRVL doesn't reinvent the formula of the previous generation, and I don't think it needed to. The same cushioning, stability, and dependable gravel and dirt traction remain, while the new quickLACE™ neo system makes the shoes faster and easier to secure/adjust.  I prefer the Aero Blaze 4 GRVL over the previous generation. The cushioning ‘platform’ works well for my heavier running style, the contaGRIP® outsole provides the traction I want on gravel and dirt trails, and the new lacing system is a genuine improvement in everyday use. Add in the updated styling and reflective elements, and Salomon has made a good mixed terrain running shoe even more refined without losing what worked in the first place.
