Initial Impressions

The DAS Optics SOLAS Photochromic Sunglasses offer great value for the price. I've worn them for about a month of mountain biking and casual use, and they've proven to be comfortable, lightweight and effective at blocking wind and trail dust. The photochromic lenses adapt to changing light.  I tested the Metallic Red finish, which adds a little color without looking out of place on the trail.  Beyond the product itself, DAS Optics also donates $10 from every pair of sunglasses or goggles sold to an organization selected by the customer at checkout.

Detailed Review

The SOLAS has a full-coverage design similar to other mountain biking and outdoor sunglasses. They're lightweight and comfortable, with no pressure points around my nose or temples. The nosepiece is fixed in place, so there's no adjustment available there, but the flexible, rubberized ends of the arms are a nice touch. They help accommodate different head shapes and provide a secure fit.

The glasses stay in place while riding and work well with a helmet. I haven't experienced any bouncing or interference between the frames and helmet. They also do a nice job blocking wind, and I haven't noticed any dust getting around the lenses while riding.

The photochromic lenses transition at a reasonable pace as lighting conditions change. Clarity is good, with no noticeable distortion. I haven't noticed a significant contrast boost, but visibility is good overall. My only criticism is that the lenses could be a little darker in full sun. Outside of those brightest conditions, they've worked extremely well.

After a month of use, I haven't experienced any fogging or scratching. I store them in the included hard case, with the soft case and cleaning cloth also available for carrying and lens care. The Metallic Red finish looks good, and the overall design works just as well for casual use as it does on the bike.

Closing Thoughts

The DAS Optics SOLAS Photochromic Sunglasses are a good value, offering comfortable full coverage, effective wind protection and capable photochromic lenses at an affordable price. They stay secure while riding, work well with a helmet and have held up nicely through a month of use. The lenses could be a touch darker in full sun but this takes nothing from the overall value.  When you factor in the included hard case, soft case and cleaning cloth, these sunglasses are a outstanding value.

Another nice aspect of buying from DAS Optics is its donation program. The company donates $10 for every pair of sunglasses or goggles sold, and customers can choose an organization to receive the donation at checkout. It's a great way to support organizations doing good work while purchasing a product you'll use. If you're looking for an affordable pair of mountain biking glasses that also work well for everyday use, the SOLAS is worth considering.
